The 20-year-old missed the start of the season through injury, yet featured for Ajax in their last two encounters, both against Mpumalanga Black Aces, in the League and Telkom Knockout, and was pleased with his displays for the Cape Town side.
“Yes, I am very happy with my performances,” Mzwakali tells KickOff.com.
"When you get those chances, this is where you have to step up and show the coach that you want to play. If you’re working hard and the coach sees that, he will give you the chance.”
Ajax had a number of players missing on international duty which has disrupted their preparations ahead of their match-up with Chiefs, and Mzwakali feels this could be his chance to jump at the big occasion should he be needed.
“It’s one of the most difficult things the team faces,” the midfielder says. “Many of our international players have been out for a while, and now return with two days left to prepare for the match against Chiefs. It’s up to the coaches to decide [who plays].
“But for us as players, this is where we need to work hard to be ready to fill in for these players, and be considered by the coach should he need us.”
Mzwakali admitted it was hard to be out on the sidelines during the initial stages of the season, yet highlighted the influence of the experienced members of the Ajax squad which kept him motivated.
“With experienced players like Dominic Isaacs, Granwald Scott and Cecil Lolo around you, they keep motivating you, telling you to push, and saying, ‘Now it’s time, because we need you in the team’,” he says. “So that’s where you need to push yourself so everyone can see you’re working hard, and that’s when you can get your chance.”
Mzwakali hopes consistent game-time and a solid display on the pitch this season could see him join his fellow young club mates in the national team set-up.
“It’s great to see the younger guys like Rivaldo [Coetzee] and Aya [Magqwaka] in the national team,” he says. “It motivates me, so that when I do get game-time, coach Shakes can see me.”
Ajax play host to high-flyers Kaizer Chiefs this Sunday at the Cape Town Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 15:30.
