Born in Turkey, Ertugral learned his trade in Germany, and went on to coach the Democratic Republic of Congo before taking over the reins of Kaizer Chiefs in 1999.
The 54-year-old has also managed Golden Arrows and Santos when the latter were in the top-flight.
"Ertugral was told that he qualifies to apply for South African citizenship and this is good news for him and Ajax," says Ajax’s public relations officer Shooz Mekuto.
"People do not understand all the difficulties we have to go through behind the scenes when a coach is not a South African.
"Things like organising permits for his family. When the coach gets his residency papers it will bring stability and will mean he has nothing to worry about other than coaching."
