Cape Town City started life without Benni McCarthy with a 5-3 victory over Polokwane City in the Absa Premiership on Wednesday night.
Charlton Mashumba started ahead of Mohammed Anas for the visiting side, as the hosts gave a run to Sage Stephens in goal with Greek defender Ioannis Potouridis making his debut.
The home side’s intentions were clear from the get go after Kermit Erasmus fired the opener inside five minutes following a ball from Riyaad Norodien.
City netted a second six minutes thereafter after Erasmus went from scorer to provider for none other than Siphelele Mthembu who nestled the back of the net.
A substitution two minutes later albeit enforced for the visitors saw the removal of Nicholas Motloung for Themba Chauke in defence.
Rise and Shine reduced the lead in the 21st minute after Mashumba capitalised on poor defending to finish from close proximity. The Citizens, though, made a quick recovery and revived the two-goal cushion on the stroke of halftime through another well worked finish from Erasmus.
As the pace slightly dropped from the first half, Mpho Makola entered for the Citizens along with Craig Martin in the 63rd and 65th minute respectively.
Makola compiled more misery for the men from Limpopo on 71 minutes with a pin-point header following a ball into the area from Thamsanqa Mkhize.
Two minutes later, the Citizens made it five after Edmilson Dove danced around the defence to beat Polokwane shot-stopper George Chigova from a tight angle.
The visitors hit back in the final four minutes through a simple finish from Mashuma, who went on to complete his hat-trick two minutes later with another close range strike at the death.
