Downs claim derby bragging rights

Premiership

Mamelodi Sundowns returned to winning ways in the Absa Premiership with a 2-1 victory over SuperSport United in the Tshwane derby on Sunday.

Sundowns star midfielder Themba Zwane returned from a one-match suspension, as Sphelele Mkhulise dropped to the bench after starting the midweek defeat against Orlando Pirates.

A brilliant ball from Hlompho Kekana picked out Sibusiso Vilakazi who looked to lob Ronwen Williams on 11 minutes, but the end result saw the ball going wide of target.

Sundowns eventually grabbed the lead after Zwane marked his return with a simple tap-in from the near side after SuperSport's defence failed to deal with Tebogo Langerman's corss after 32 minutes.

Switching of play around the area five minutes later between Sipho Mbule and Dean Furman ended with Evans Rusike, who hurriedly fired way of the intended target.

Masandawana strongly returned in the second half, as Gaston Sirino threatened a second with a quick one-two following slick one-touch passing from the front contingent.

SuperSport clawed their way back as Furman slotted home from the penalty spot after Kudakwashe Mahachi went down under the challenge of Andile Jali in the 18-yard area.

The defending champions showcased their quality as Thapelo Morena sent a fine volley past a helpless Williams following a pin-point cross by Kekana shortly after the hour mark.

SuperSport had a chance to go level four minutes later after  Bradley Grobler exchanged passes with Thamsanqa Gabuza before dragging the final attempt wide with only Denis Onyango to beat.

A change from the SuperSport bench after 73 minutes heralded the entry of Ghampani Lungu, who filled in for Evans Rusike while Phakamani Mahlambi replaced the injured Morena for Sundowns..

The changes brought no telling impact for SuperSport though, as Masandawana held on to move within seven points of league leaders Kaizer Chiefs, who dropped points at Black Leopards on Saturday.
