City dent Bucs' title hopes with late goal

Premiership

Title-chasing Orlando Pirates played to an entertaining 2-2 draw against Cape Town City in the Absa Premiership on Saturday.

City started with three changes in Edmilson, Chris David and Gift Links, as Pirates came unchanged from the narrow win over Maritzburg United.

A dream start for City put the Buccaneers on the back-foot after Zukile Kewuti fired in the opener in the first minute through poor defending.

Pirates missed a decent opportunity to draw level after captain Happy Jele hoofed over the top from close-range. However, the equaliser came a minute later after Thembinkosi Lorch broke free down the left side before firing a low effort beyond Peter Leeuwenburgh.

Bucs nearly grabbed the lead on 25 minutes through Vincent Pule’s powerful strike, however Leeuwenburgh palmed for a corner.

The hosts, who went quiet after the opener, almost grabbed a second on 35 minutes but Kewuti headed wide from five just metres as both sides continued go back and fourth.

Neither side went for changes during the halftime interval, as Siphelele Mthembu immediately fired into the side-netting as City signalled their intent early on in the second half.

However, Pirates went in front on 50 minutes when Luvuyo Memela tucked home a loose ball from close-range after the Citizens failed to clear their lines.

City pushed bodies forward for the equaliser, while Benni McCarthy saw the need for fresh legs as Mthembu made way for Shane Roberts in the final 20 minutes.

With 10 minutes left to play, the Citizens levelled matters Craig Martin rose up to head home a well-laid delivery from six-yards out, much to the delight of the home supporters.

In time added on, Wayne Sandilands ensured the spoils were shared on the day as he showed quick reflexes to push Riyaad Norodien’s low free-kick around the post as the final whistle sung.
