Cape Town City returned to winning ways in the Absa Premiership with a 2-0 victory over Bidvest Wits at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday night.
City made three changes in Thamsanqa Mkhize, Roland Putsche and Ioannis Potouridis, as Wits welcomed back Thabang Monare and Sameehg Doutie who started on the bench in midweek.
A set back as early as the tenth minute saw Wits striker Terrence Dzvukamanja stretchered off the field due to injury, and was replaced by Haashim Domingo.
Craig Martin made a late run into the area and connected with Surprise Ralani’s cross a minute later, but the diminutive winger headed way over the top.
Wits introduced more firepower straight after halftime as Gift Motupa came on for Bienvenu Eva Nga, as momentum continued swinging either end.
The Citizens found a golden chance to go in front, but Thabo Nodada failed to tuck away a penalty on 61 minutes after Mkhize went down from Monare’s challenge in the six-yard area.
City duly went ahead four minutes later after a shot from Taariq Fielies deflected onto the left-hand post before bouncing back into play and kindly to Kermit Erasmus, who stabbed home.
The Clever Boys pushed for the equaliser just before full-time, but brave goalkeeping from Leeuwenburgh thwarted Cole Alexander from point-blank range.
City made the points safe in the last four minutes when Martin got onto a through pass from Ralani after beating the offside trap to slot past Ricardo Goss.
The evening ended on a sour note for Martin, who earned a red card following a second bookable offence in added time, as Wits suffer their first away defeat.
