Usuthu frustrated by Baroka

Premiership

AmaZulu and Baroka FC could not be separated as the sides played to a 0-0 draw at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

It means Bakgaga remain ahead of AmaZulu on the standings only by virtue of a superior goal difference and move up one to 13th position, while Usuthu also move up one from 15th to 14th above Polokwane City, who play Kaizer Chiefs in the next PSL fixture on Saturday.

It is a missed opportunity for both sides, who have tough run-ins to the season in terms of the fixture schedule.

AmaZulu had the first chance of the game in the 10th minute. Former Bafana Bafana international Tsepo Masilela was fouled on the left-hand side and the the free-kick was delivered by Sphesihle Maduna to the back post with an unmarked Masilela heading a good opportunity wide.

Baroka had their first chance of game when Usuthu defender Mario Booysen gave away a free-kick on the edge of the box. Gerald Phiri Jr curled the set-piece over the wall and it went narrowly wide via a deflection.

Bakgaga came close in the 32nd minute when Phiri Jr played in Thuso Mogale down the left-hand side, with the winger striking a fierce drive at Usuthu goalkeeper Neil Boshoff from an acute angle, bringing out a smart one-handed save from the shot-stopper.

AmaZulu attacker Maduna had two chances in quick succession approximately ten minutes after the half-time interval. On the first occasion, he broke the offside trap but shot straight at Baroka keeper Elvis Chipezeze.

On the second occasion, he also managed to get in behind while making sure he was not offside but fired his shot in to the side-netting when he really should have done better.

Shortly after, Usuthu were almost punished for their wastefulness when Ethan Sampson went on a bullocking run down the right-hand side before delivering in to the box for Malawian striker Richard Mbulu, whose shot was unfortunately straight at Boshoff.

Thamsanqa Masiya looked lively since replacing Lungelo Nguse and came close in the 79th minute when he cut inside on to his favoured right foot from the left-hand side but narrowly dragged his shot wide of the right-hand upright.

In the end, neither side could find the back of the net as a bottom-of-the-table scrap ended goalless.
