Stranded PSL star's R150k injury bill

A former Highlands Park defender has revealed why he had to pay a R150 000 injury bill from his own pocket when TS Galaxy bought the club.

Tanzanian defender Abdi Banda spent R150 000 out of his own pocket on his rehabilitation following the sale of Highlands Park and his subsequent release by TS Galaxy.

Banda was on the books of Highlands last season after joining from Baroka but found himself stranded when the Lions of the North were sold to Tim Sukazi while he was injured.

"I still had a year remaining on my contract when Highlands was sold, while I was injured and away at home in Tanzania," he tells

"The new owner of the club Tim Sukazi then told me that the coach doesn’t want me, so we terminated my contract after we agreed that he pays me four months' salary.

"Through my injury I found myself then spending more than R150 000 out of my own pocket since the club that I was injured while playing for had been sold and the new owners didn’t need me."

The 25-year-old was then lucky to be offered medical help free of charge by former Bafana Bafana team doctor Ephraim Nematswerani.

"Then after spending the money from my pocket I was then lucky to meet the former Bafana Bafana doctor who offered to help me for free at a hospital here in Johannesburg," Banda reveals.

"I can only be grateful to him that he helped with my thigh injury until I was fully recovered. He is so kind-hearted that he has even offered that I come back if I feel any discomfort again, but so far so good, which is why I even trained with Black Leopards a few weeks ago before they fired Dylan Kerr.

"I just need to get a team and start playing again because I still need my place in the national team. The only way for me to play in the national team is if I am active."

Banda was last in action before the lockdown break last year.
