The 28-year-old joined from Tottenham Hotspur at the beginning of the season, and featured in ten matches for the Pretoria-based club.
Matsatsantsa have however triggered a clause in the player’s contract allowing him to leave in January, with both parties agreeing to part ways.
“Bongani Khumalo has been released by SuperSport United FC,” read a statement released by the club.
“The Club and the Player had an option to release Khumalo in January 2016 and after discussions between the parties following Khumalo’s lack of game time recently it was agreed to part ways.”
SuperSport CEO Stan Matthews had nothing but praise for the former Bafana Bafana skipper.
“Bongani is a consummate professional, he was unhappy at not getting game time in recent matches, we as a club can also not afford to have a big player like him sitting on the bench so we agreed to let him go and explore his options, we wish him all the best,” he said.
As reported earlier by KickOff.com, Bidvest Wits have shown keen interest in the player, who is now free to join a club of his choice.
