Pirates set new league record

Orlando Pirates set a new record in the 2019/20 season during their match against Stellenbosch at the weekend.

Pirates suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Premiership newbies at CapeTown Stadium on Saturday afternoon, resulting in their slipping down to 10th place on the log.

It has been a turbulent start for the Buccaneers, who have won just two of their eight league games thus far, with pressure mounting on coach Rhulani Mokwena and his technical team.

But Saturday’s encounter saw the Soweto side set a new record in the way of statistics after attempting a massive 32 shots at Stellies’ goal, though they failed to find the back of the net.

Of those goal attempts, only five were in fact on target – leaving them with an accuracy of a paltry 15,6 percent – one of the worst so far this season.

Bucs also registered 32 attempts against the reigning First Division champions in their Telkom Knockout first round clash last weekend but walked away 1-0 victors in that instance, after managing eight shots on target (25 percent accuracy).

To put it all into perspective, even during the highest-scoring match of the season so far, in which Bidvest Wits beat Pirates 4-3, both sides registered a combined total of 25 shots at goal – Wits attempted 10 shots with six on target; Pirates attempted 15 with nine on target.
