Bucs face Al Ahly in the Champions League Final on Saturday at Orlando Stadium. Kick-off is 8.30pm.
The Bafana coach reminds fans of the heights South Africa achieved as a country the last time Pirates were victorious in Africa.
“Pirates are not doing this for themselves but for the country,” he says. “Remember after their famous victory in 1995 our football blossomed and we went on to win the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations.”
Igesund also sends good wishes to Bucs coach Roger de Sa and his technical team, saying they should not let previous results against he Egyptian giants burden them.
Pirates beat Al Ahly 3-0 in El Gouna, Egypt in the group stage, but were held to a 0-0 draw at home.
“To Roger, his technical team and the players, this is the moment you have all been dreaming of now it has come – go out there and do the best you can and we know you will deliver,” Igesund says.
“Forget about your past result against Al Ahly as it will not matter this time around. Get a good result at home and you have one hand on the trophy.
“I would also like to emphasise the words of our Safa president [Danny Jordaan] when he says fans must come in numbers to make life unbearable for Al Ahly at Orlando Stadium, because in Cairo they will not make things easy for our boys.
“Let us forget about our club colours but focus on the bigger picture which is the flag of the country because that is what Pirates will be defending. Good luck.”
