Worgu caught the interest of local teams after his exploits and goal scoring prowess helped Enyimba reach the African Champions League semi finals this year.
According to a locally- based Nigerian agent, Mohammed Lawal, Worgu has signed a four year contract with the El Merreikh, who are reported to have forked out more than R15 million to bring the player to Sudan.
“I don’t have many details on his signing as I was only involved in trying to bring the player to South Africa. But I understand he has signed a four-year contract and will only start playing for them in January next year.”
Worgu, who tops the Champs League scoring charts with 13 goals, says he opted to join Merreikh for professional reasons rather than financial.
The 19-year-old was targeted by five-time African champions, Egypt’s Al Ahly and other powerhouses in the region and in Europe.
“For many they think it’s all about the money, but for me, it is about something more satisfying and fulfilling,” Worgu says.
“You just don’t pack your bags and go to Europe because many people say so - there is a right time and moment for you to take such a big decision and you are mentally prepared.”
“I was linked with every club you could think of but it all happened in the papers. But the moment Merreikh came into the picture they showed passion and determination,” he adds.
Although his move to the Sudanese outfit was a bit controversial, the up-and-coming player assured he’s delighted with the deal.
“Merreikh has unbelievable facilities and also possess a strong professional attitude in all ramifications,” he said.
“The club understands that I am young and have guaranteed me an easy route to a bigger challenge elsewhere if the time comes.”
