Van Heerden injured his knee in May during a club training session.
“The Nigeria match is going to be played in my hometown and I would have loved to be part of it,” the player tells KickOff.com.
“But unfortunately I can’t play; it’s beyond my control. But I hope to start training with my Belgian team in two weeks time or so. At least I have the Equatorial Guinea match to aim for,” he adds.
With the Belgium First Division just a week away from kick-off, Van Heerden says he is working hard to regain his fitness.
“It’s been almost three months since I got injured, so I have already started training. Fortunately for me, our matches have been postponed because we have two players at the Olympics and I hope that by the time the League starts I will have one or two matches.”
Since making his debut in 2004 against Cape Verde, Van Heerden went to be capped 28 times by the senior national team and the last time he played was in the 2008 Nations Cup finals against Senegal.
