This after Ajax Cape Town lost 2-0 at Mamelodi Sundowns.
The People’s Team dominated the opening stages of the first half and made their intentions clear from the start.
They threatened as early as the third minute when Romano Scott released Eleazar Rodgers down the right, but the lanky striker’s cross was a poor one, with Tawonga Chimodzi and Erwin Isaacs lurking in the Supersport penalty area.
Santos threatened again in the 10th minute when Rodgers rose highest at the far post to meet Thomrick October’s curling free-kick, but the striker’s header was well saved by former Santos goalkeeper Andre Arendse.
Chimodzi should have handed the People’s Team the lead in the 19th minute when he weaved his way through the Supersport defence, but the striker showed a lack of composure inside the area, when he rushed his shot, with his effort flying straight at Arendse.
Arendse was called into action again three minutes later when Isaacs latched onto a cross by October, but his header flew straight in the arms of the Matsatsantsa keeper.
Santos wasted another glorious chance a minute later when Otieno sent Scott clear on goal, but the winger’s shot straight at Arendse, with Isaacs and Rodgers free in the center.
Supersport’s first real chance of the game came in the 32nd minute when Katlego Mphela capitalised on a defensive error by Bevan Fransch, before hitting the post with a low shot from just outside the area.
The match remained goalless at halftime
The visitors gave a better showing in the opening stages of the second half, but were unable to penetrate the solid Santos defence.
The hosts threatened in the 61st minute when October curled in another quality free-kick, and although Mogogi Gabonamong did well to get to the ball, the midfielder’s header was a weak one and was comfortably gathered by Arendse.
The visitors threatened seven minutes later when Mphela collected the ball just outside the Santos area before surging through the defence, but a superb recovery challenge by Santos skipper Musa Otieno denied the Supersport striker from hitting the target.
Santos almost stole the points at the death when Arendse’s poor clearance fell straight to Chimodzi, but the striker’s flew well wide of goal, with the Supersport goalkeeper well out of position.
The final chance of the game fell to Gabonamong in the referee’s optional time when he latched onto a loose ball on the edge of the area, but the midfielder’s fierce low shot flew straight at Arendse.
