Sundowns seek double over Celtic

News

It is a measure of Sundowns’ inconsistency that they have not managed three league wins on the spin at any stage in the season.

This statistic is in stark contrast to last season's campaign from the Brazilians, where they went on a run of 11 straight victories in the mid to latter stages that secured their fifth PSL title.

However, Trott Moloto will be confident of a second league win under his tenure as caretaker coach against Phunya Sele Sele.

The Brazilians claimed a morale-boosting win away at Golden Arrows on Wednesday afternoon, with new signings Bryan Aldave and Fanyana Dhladhla scoring the goals.

It broke a losing streak of three matches and handed Sundowns valuable points as they look to move clear of the lower reaches of the league table.

Celtic, after firing coach Khabo Zondo, conceded a calamitous goal in their defeat at home to Orlando Pirates thanks to goalkeeper Posnett Omony.

Usually the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium is a fortress for Phunya Sele Sele, but their recent form – five losses in their last six league games – means that almost any team now fancies themselves to pick up points there.

Celtic then, enters the game as underdogs, but Sundowns’ confidence is frail after the first seven months of what has been a poor season by their standards.

Both teams are in severe need of the points on offer, so this could turn into a something of a scrap between two struggling giants of South African football.

The Brazilians have a superior head-to-head record, having won 18 matches to Celtic’s 10 in their 39 league meeting since 1985, and an Esrom Nyandoro penalty handed Sundowns victory over their opponents in the first half of the league season.
