Sunderland chief executive resigns


The 28-year-old faces a prison sentence after being found guilty of sexual activity with a 15-year-old.

The club suspended the player in March 2015 when the charges were made but allowed him to play again 16 days later, and he played 28 times until the eve of his trial last month.

Byrne acknowledged that her decision to allow Johnson to continue playing for Sunderland “was a serious mistake” and has stepped down.
