Thanda could find themselves in the bottom two later tonight if Bloemfontein Celtic can avoid defeat to Bidvest Wits.
Possession may have been evenly shared in the opening stanza, but it was Stars who looked by far more threatening in front of goal.
Ea Lla Koto were quickly onto the offensive and in the seventh minute Sthembiso Ngcobo had the first shot on goal, but his effort from only 12-yards flew over the bar.
In the 23rd minute Stars winger Ruben Cloete tried his luck from the edge of the area, but his shot effort also sailed high over the goal.
Thanda had to wait until the half hour mark for their first opportunity of the game - the chance fell to Felix Obada, but his long range shot was well saved by Kennedy Mweene.
Paulus Masehe was then desperately unlucky not to hand the home side the lead four minutes before the break when his shot from 20-yards out crashed into the bar.
The first half ended in a flurry as Nkosinathi Nhleko's long range shot forced another save out of Mweene, while Matome Madimabe and Ngcobo had shots at goal for the home team.
Stars maintained their ascendancy in the second stanza, creating more chances as Ngcobo sent a 54th minute header wide and Thamane Motaung missed the target from 18-yards out three minutes later.
The game then went into somewhat of a lull as far as goal-chances were concerned, until the 82nd minute that it, when Stars finally found a way past the Thanda defence.
Motaung was the goal scorer, putting the ball into the roof of the net from close range after Prince Olomu's assist.
Thanda ended the game with 10 men when Bongani Mbhele was red-carded a few minutes from time.
And then just before the final whistle, Ngcobo rubbed salt into Amabhubesi’s wounds when he netted from the edge of the area with an excellent strike.
