Player injured in football violence

While Owolabi's club have claimed that the player was stabbed by Gombe United fans who invaded the pitch, a Gombe official says the player injured himself when he tried to break the door to home team dressing room.

Mathias Samuel shot the home side in front after 35 minutes, a goal that 3SC describe as dubious. New signing Tony Edjomariegwe drew the visitors level on the stroke of halftime.

With two minutes remaining and tensions sky high, Gombe found a winner, although Shooting claim their player was fouled in the build-up.

Fans invaded the pitch at the end and Owolabi was left bleeding from a deep gash that required stitches.

Shooting Stars board member Tunde Anifowoshe says the club is considering legal action. But Gombe United Team Manager Ibrahim Kwairanga says his club are innocent.

"Mutiu Adepoju entered the field and insulted the referee. The player that was injured, got the injury when he tried to break our dressing room door made with glass."

This is the latest in a growing series of violence in the Nigerian domestic game. Just last week, Dolphins striker Emma Nwachi was assaulted by an Ocean Boys' official while he sat on his team's bench.
