Schurrle: We can beat the French

“France have some fantastic individual players like [Paul] Pogba, [Karim] Benzema and [Mathieu] Valbuena,” the 23-year-old told FIFA.

“They have a lot of quality and can create goals from any situation. We know their strengths, but we also know ours.”

The Chelsea frontman was an inspired substitute in Germany’s extra-time 2-1 victory over Algeria in their Last 16 encounter, and having featured for just 28 minutes in all of Germany’s group stage encounters, Schurrle hopes he has done enough to impress coach Joachim Low to consider giving him a starting berth against the French.

“It’s a childhood dream to be at a World Cup here in Brazil,” he said.

“Now we’ve got to show what we’re made of against France in the quarter-final. Anyone would love to be part of a match like that!

“My chances of starting the match on Friday definitely haven’t worsened.”

Schurrle knows his side will have to up their game from their narrow victory over the Algerians, yet the talented forward believes if they stick to their game, Die Mannschaft will be able to edge Les Bleus for a spot in the last four of the competition.

“Against France we’ve got to perform better,” said Schurrle.

“We’ve just got to concentrate and play well.

“If we can do that, we can beat the French too.”

Kick-off between the two European heavyweights is scheduled for 6pm South African time.
