Sangweni gets that wonderful feeling

He has been playing regularly at the modest club but on Wednesday night the 26 year-old surprised himself with his first-ever goal for the club.

The central defender was on the edge of the box when he got the ball and somehow manager to squeeze it past a diving Thanda Royal Zulu FC keeper Aime Kitenge to net Abafana Bes’thende solitary goal.

“I got this strange feeling after scoring that goal,” admits Sangweni.

“Truly, I have never thought of myself as a player who would score for Arrows because my focus has always been on defending. I play as a central defender and it was not expected of me to score. I must admit though, it wasn’t the most beautiful of goals but it earned us a point.

“I imagine that since I have now scored my first goal, I will be on the look out and try and score more in the future.

“The only other time I have scored was when I was in the First Division, playing for Uthukela. That was more than three years ago and I was playing at right back.

“I am sure that my teammates are going to tease me at training from now onwards. My only regret is that I wish I had scored earlier and my teammates may have been motivated to go on with their business and score another one.”

The steely defender has only recently returned to action after a rare spell on the sidelines with an ankle injury.

Sangweni has been the most consistent player in the Arrows’ starting line-up in the past two years and tells Kick Off that he is satisfied with the progress that he is making.
