Safa bungling could affect Nedbank Cup

The Premiership clubs are due to enter the last-32 stage shortly after the Cup of Nations in Ghana ends on February 20 and, as such, organisers of the various Vodacom regional leagues have been instructed to expedite the names of the clubs who are scheduled to go into the draw for the preliminary rounds of the tournament – Nedbank’s first venture into soccer - that begins in January.

However, when Safa went into its Christmas recess on December 7, no details of their updated tables were issued.

_quote's efforts to elicit information regarding reports that there is unhappiness in some regions over the names of clubs put forward, have hit a brick wall.

In one region, it was reported that current log leader and another that was placed fourth at that stage, had been submitted.

Moreover, while the soccer season continues in all nine provinces, has discovered that there were no contingency plans put in place by Safa to deal with any form of emergency, which may have arisen during this period.

A case in point is the Western Cape region, where log leaders Vasco da Gama were unexpectedly scheduled to play four games in just five days.

Confirming this, club official Phillip Ribeiro says: “Vasco played three Cup games in quick succession, including matches on Tuesday and Thursday this week.

“Prior to this, on Saturday our match with UWC was postponed until Monday and we are still expected to face Mr Price Parkhurst in a top-of-the-table clash this evening (Friday).

“I tried to get this game re-scheduled and finally received the verbal go ahead, but because Safa are on holiday they cannot issue us with anything in writing.

“We cannot risk losing the points so we’ll have to play our fourth game in a week and just hope that our team is up to the task.”

Vodacom League clubs also appear to be confused as to what is going to happen at the end of the season concerning promotion into the First Division.

Initially it was said that there would be no changes in the format, which will see the winners of each stream participate in the Vodacom League National Play-Offs in May 2008.

However, a source has revealed to that according to Safa WP president Vernon Seymour, the Vodacom League winners are going to be promoted directly into the Coastal and Inland First Division streams.
