Recalling the 1995 Final

The then Wits University overcame Pirates 1-0 at FNB Stadium, with Nigerian striker Benson Otiti on target for the Clever Boys.

A young Sipho Sephadi started in central midfield that day and played his heart out, and 16 years later he believes the latest battle will just be as tight.

“The 1995 Final was a tense affair as we were playing against a great Pirates team which went on to even win the Champions League that year,” he tells

“That day we applied ourselves and dominated in the important areas and I believe we deserved the Cup. Remember, that year we were on fire as we also won the BP Top 8.”

Sephadi – now the Under-17 coach at Jomo Cosmos – believes this Saturday night’s Final at Moses Mabhida will be just be as tricky as the ’95 contest.

“It will definitely be a difficult game this weekend, especially considering that Wits just beat Pirates two weeks ago,” he adds.

“Pirates will obviously have the crowd behind them, but whoever shows they want it more on the night will win it. I have noticed Wits now play with flair and they have a couple of boys capable of winning any game for them, so I feel they stand the same chance.

“In fact, Wits should be feeling they can do it considering the result they got against Pirates recently. I will not be taking sides but I just want to watch an exciting final.”
