Zidane rues last-gasp Clasico defeat

Los Blancos looked to have earned a point after James Rodriguez levelled the scores in the 85th minute, but a stoppage-time winner from Lionel Messi made it a 3-2 victory for Barca.

"We can’t be happy, we did a lot, all through the game, we had a lot of chances to put the match in our favour," Zidane said after the game.

"My assessment is that we weren’t able to kill the match and that's where we are disappointed. When you don’t kill off the game, it can pass you by and that’s what happened.

"There are many games in which we’ve had many chances and not scored goals from them. That punishes you because in the end our opponents are very good teams that can do damage, and [Barca] did that."

The match also saw Sergio Ramos sent off in the 77th minute, and Zidane admits they didn’t keep things compact with 10 men prior to Messi’s 500th goal for Barca deciding the match.

"When you get to 2-2 with 10 men, you need to use your head a little more and defend closer together," the Frenchman added.

"[Messi] makes the difference in his team. He scored twice, but Barca aren’t just Messi. We didn’t control the moments when we could hurt our opponents well. The fact they hurt us was logical."
