Goals by Papy Faty, S’boniso Gumede and Ryan Chapman ensured the three points for Wits. Bongani Ndulula was on the scoresheet for Usuthu but his equaliser was in vain.
The match sparked into the life inside the first 10 minutes when Bryce Moon dribbled down the right flank – as the AmaZulu defence tried to cut him out the ball deflected onto Faty outside the box and the Burundian midfielder hit a first time low shot to make it 1-0.
Wits’ lead only lasted eight minutes, however, as Craig Rosslee’s charges got back into the match after some sloppy defending allowed Ndulula to tap in from close range.
The hosts were back in front in the 36th minute when former AmaZulu player Gumede was able to slip the ball home after the visitors failed to clear their lines from a corner kick.
In the 48th minute Tinashe Nengomasha could have made it 3-1 but his powerful shot from just outside the box went narrowly wide.
With 15 minutes remaining Wits got their third. AmaZulu cleared an attempt off the line from a corner kick, but Chapman was on hand to head home.
