Thanks to the win, the Tycoons move up to the 10th position, one place above Kaizer Chiefs. The Students drop to sixth position.
Wits caught the Tycoons still napping when a first minute corner on the left, taken by Richard Rantjie, was headed in by striker Marcos de Jesus, 1-0. Stars coach Miguel Gamondi was livid; for obvious reason as his side had not yet awoken.
After Stars recovered from this early setback, they were actually slightly the better side, while Wits counter-attacked with venom.
It was not a nasty match, but there were some nasty tackles. For example, Phumudzo Manenzhe had to leave the pitch already in the 35th minute, due to an injury picked up after a harsh tackle by Wits midfielder Noah Chivuta.
Earlier in the match, the Stars striker had tackled Wits left-back Almiro Lobo badly, which resulted in a yellow card by referee Jonas Nhlapo. Manenzhe was replaced by Simba Marumo. The Tycoons dominated the last part of the first half, but it did not result in any real chances.
Stars started the second half like they had ended the first; having more possession. However, this time it resulted as well in a goal when Tsepho Ramokala received the ball just outside the Wits box, made some moves and, accordingly, shot the ball in the right corner from a slightly left-angle, leaving keeper Moeneeb Josephs no chance.
Hereafter the game flowed up and down, from box to box with none of the teams creating any real chances. The battle was mostly fought in the central midfield and especially some early pressure by Stars, from the moment Wits got close to their half, cared that the Students never really got into their rhythm.
No team ever looked like scoring a second goal until, again, Ramokala, in a similar situation as his first goal, scored his second of the evening.
That was the moment Wits really started to attack, trying to score the equalizer, but it was too late.
Stars book an important win, as they struggled to gain three points in recent matches. The Tycoons next host Moroka Swallows on Monday evening, ahead of their important MTN African Champions League third round, first leg clash against the Egyptian champions Al Ahly.
Wits will travel to Thohoyandou to face Black Leopards next Saturday.
