Pirates to meet Chiefs in final

Chiefs met Pirates during last month’s Vodacom Challenge.

The match ended 1-1 after regulation time, with Gerald Sibeko scoring for the Amakhosi, and Surprise Moriri netted for the Brazilians.

Chiefs took the lead in the third minute when they were awarded an indirect free-kick inside the area after referee Daniel Bennett harshly adjudged Sundowns’ keeper Brian Baloyi of collecting a back-pass from Mbulelo Mabizela, when replays showed that it was not a back-pass by the defender.

Sibeko made no mistake as he fired the resultant free-kick into the top corner.

Moriri wasted a glorious chance to level matters in the 12th minute when he closed his eyes as he went for a cross from Chabangu, but had the Bafana Bafana player kept his eyes on the ball he would have seen that Amakhosi keeper Emile Baron missed the ball.

Moriri again failed to find the back of the net when he was played through on goal by Jorge Acuna, but the striker sot straight at Baron.

However, the Sundowns striker made no mistake in the 42nd minute when Sundowns were awarded a penalty after Gordon Gilbert handled the ball inside the area, and Moriri made no mistake from the spot, to leave the score tied at 1-1.

Chiefs enjoyed the better of the first half and started the second stanza in the same vein, with Thuso Phala making a hash of his shot from the edge of the area in the 59th minute.

Substitute Dario Monteria should have put the Brazilians ahead in the 79th minute when he found himself unmarked at the far post, but the striker sent his effort just wide.

Emile Baron ensured the game went into penalties when he made two superb saves at the death to deny Shakes Ngwenya and Mabizela respectively.

Masango, Nkambule, Zuke, Lebese and Masenamela all netted their penalties for Chiefs, with Ngwenya, Johannes, and Mphela scored for the Brazilians, while Koketso Mmotong missed his spot-kick.
