Swallows FC – A kindred of fallen Soweto giants Moroka Swallows – entered into an agreement with All Stars to take over their status should they earn a spot in the recently completed PSL Promotion Play-offs and ultimately gain promotion to the top flight.
However, plans were abandoned after, despite an influx of players from Swallows being brought in to assist, the Cape-based outfit fell short of their target and ended fifth on the NFD table.
Lesufi, who has led the fight to resurrect The Dube Birds for over a year now, has assured the club will find its way through the ranks and back to the Absa Premiership, and is buoyed by the backing they have received from prominent corporates by way of sponsorships.
“I think we are the only team in the ABC Motsepe League with the calibre of sponsors that we have,” said a buoyant Lesufi, when asked if the club is struggling to get financial backing.
“There are teams that are in the PSL that don’t even have a venue sponsor – we’ve got Stadium Management SA as one of our big sponsors, so we can play and train at any of their stadiums without paying.
“We have Carlistos as our official catering sponsors; we’ve got Avbob; we’ve got Blue Label Telecoms, so we’re a team whose brand is maturing nicely, that’s why we’re not rushing it.”
With supporters eagerly anticipating the club’s imminent return to the top flight, Lesufi has stressed that he is fully committed to ensuring his and the supporters’ dreams become reality.
“I know, supporters being supporters are impatient, and I hear that they say they are disappointed, but who must be more disappointed than me?” he quizzed.
“I’ve literally done everything; I can’t do anything [else] – It’s my work [as MEC] and Swallows. I can’t even do anything like take my children to Father’s Day things because it’s me and Swallows.
“I’m putting all the energy and all the time, and I’m quite convinced that it will come fine.”
