Nigeria keep their hopes alive

The Super Eagles, the defending champions, had been without a win so far and suffered a shock 1-0 defat to the same opponents over the weekend, but there was to be no repeat.

After a goalless first half in which the visitors threatened, Nigeria took the lead on 48 minutes through Ahmed Musa after John Obi Mikel had played him in.

However, the Sudanese were level soon after when a quick free-kick allowed Salah Ibrahim to sneak in and equalise.

Nigeria restored the lead in fortuitous circumstances just past the hour-mark when Emmanuel Emenike’s cross was spilled, allowing Aaron Samuel to slot home.

And the Eagles made sure of the points in the dying minutes, with Musa dispossessing a defender on the edge of the area, beating one defender and then firing home.

The result puts Nigeria on four points, with Sudan one behind and bringing up the rear.
