Modise once again started the game, under Dutch coach Rudi Krol, on the bench against Matsatsantsa.
The reigning Footballer of the Year replaced Bennett Chenene in the 76th minute but his introduction was too late to change the game in Bucs’ favour as the Gavin Hunt-led side had secured a 2-1 victory to set themselves up for a berth in the semifinals against Mamelodi Sundowns at Super Stadium on Sunday.
With Krol seemingly favouring Thembile Kanono in the midfield, it looks likely that Modise will have to sweat for his jersey, unlike during Owen Da Gama’s tenure last season when he knew that he would be in the starting line-up for every match, come rain or sunshine.
Modise’ s manager Jazzman Mahlakgane believes that there was nothing wrong with the Bafana Bafana player being on the bench on Friday.
“Teko is like any other player at Pirates. Why should he be treated with kid gloves, unlike other players? There was nothing wrong with him sitting on the bench and he, like any other player, must work hard for his position in the team.
“I was with him after the game on Friday and again on Sunday and he is okay. He doesn’t have a problem with sitting on the bench.”
