Mehmedi: Too much talk over Messi

The Argentine has been in fine form in Brazil, netting in each of his side’s group stage victories, yet opposite number Mehmedi feels too much attention is being given to the talented forward.

"With all due respect for his qualities and class, I think too much is talked about just Messi," said Mehmedi.

"He is exceptional, no question, but that is not all, he has very good players around him.”

When asked if he would want the Barcelona star’s shirt after the game, the 23-year-old quickly responded, "Swap jerseys with Messi? I'm not here as a tourist.

"Switzerland is in the second round of a World Cup."

The sixth-ranked nation at this year’s Mundial qualified second from Group E behind France, needing a victory in the final group fixture against Honduras to seal progression into the knockout stages.

And their Freiburg forward believes his side are full of potential, yet will face a tough task against their South American counter-parts.

"I know the quality and potential of this team," he said.

"If we defeat Argentina, we write a piece of World Cup history and many people in Switzerland will be proud of the team.

"I even think such success would see the world take notice, but we are not naive.

"It will take an absolutely top performance of each one of us. And I assure you, everyone will do everything we can to provide these and tearing for Switzerland."

Kick-off for Switzerland’s Last 16 clash against Argentina is scheduled for 6pm South African time.
