McCarthy captains, surprise in defence

News

McCarthy has been named stand-in skipper in the absence of the suspended Aaron Mokoena.

Meanwhile, KickOff.com understands Mamelodi Sundowns’ Siboniso Gaxa will be a surprise inclusion at rightback ahead of Bryce Moon as coach Joel Santana tries to beef up his defence.

Moon gives the team more options going forward, but can be found wanting in his defensive duties, and Santana believes Gaxa can give the team more steel at the back.

Also returning to the side is Mbulelo Mabizela, who will be winning his 45th cap, but the first since the 2006 Nations Cup in Egypt, in the place of Mokoena. He got the nod ahead of Russia-based Matthew Booth, who was also hoping to earn his first cap since 2005.

Otherwise, the line-up for tomorrow will be the same as the one that started against Australia in the friendly international on August 19.

Bafana line-up vs Nigeria: Itumeleng Kune – Siboniso Gaxa, Mbulelo Mabizela, Nasief Morris, Bradley Carnell – Teko Modise, Kagiso Dikgacoi, Macbeth Sibaya, Siphiwe Tshabalala – Siyabonga Nkosi – Benni McCarthy
