Mbolhi: We’re part of history

Algeria were eliminated from the tournament following a 2-1 loss at the hands of Germany on Monday evening, yet put up a spirited performance by holding Die Mannschaft for 90 minutes before eventually conceding in extra time.

Shot-stopper Mbolhi was on stellar form for the Fennec Foxes, producing a host of fine saves throughout the encounter before his defence was eventually breached in the 30 minutes added on.

“We played against a very strong Germany team and conceded two goals late on,” Mobolhi, who was voted as Man of the Match, told FIFA.com after the game.

“We’re very disappointed because we felt we had a chance.”

Algeria qualified for the Last 16 for the first time in their history, a major achievement for Africa’s top-ranked side.

“We’re part of Algeria’s footballing history because we’re the first team to have come this far and we can build on this for the future,” said Mbolhi.

The glove-man then heaped praise on coach Vahid Halilhodžić for guiding the team to the knockout stages of the tournament.

“We owe it to our coach that we made it into the Round of 16,” he said. “We’d like to thank him for everything he’s done for and with the team.”
