Mbeki wants lasting legacy

Addressing the National Assembly on Thursday, Mbeki said the R40bn dedicated to stadia and other infrastructure for the event is expected to be dwarfed by public and private spending on other infrastructural projects.

“As impressive as these figures are; relying only on the World Cup for fixed investment is not sustainable.”

Economists have warned that 2010 preparations have distracted attention from bigger capital projects that will substantially expand the country’s productive capacity.

They have also warned that runaway inflation could also affect spending plans.
