Fadlu: The table isn’t being truthful

Maritzburg have started 2018/19 with three losses and a draw and are currently second-from-bottom in the standings, in contrast to the season before when they began with a hat-trick of wins and a draw.

Much is expected of this campaign after the Team of Choice finished a best-ever fourth in the league last term and reached a maiden Nedbank Cup final.

However, the club are worryingly on an eight-match winless streak stretching back from last season, having last tasted victory when they beat Mamelodi Sundowns in April in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals at Harry Gwala Stadium.

Davids, though, insists his side, which has felt the absence of midfielder Lebohang Maboe following his recent move to Sundowns, are better than what the log suggests.

"I'm really pleased with the performances so far in the league, really good," Davids said.

"The table is not telling the true story. Yes, we have to work on our attacking structures. Now that Andrea Fileccia is back, and perhaps we'll sign another attacking player, then we'll be a different team.

"But you can't take away those two league matches against Golden Arrows and Free State Stars, we were really the better team. We were really the team that created the most chances.

"We were the team that was on the front foot and we deserved to win both games. Three good performances and only one point, but I'm positive and we can only move forward now.

"I get excited when I'm working with these players; to see the new talent and create the new structures for them to be able to display these talents."

Davids' men will resume their campaign at home against Bidvest Wits on September 15 after a lengthy period of inactivity.

The KwaZulu-Natal-based outfit played to a goalless draw with visiting Kaizer Chiefs on August 17 in their previous assignment.
