Man United shoot down Burnley

The win took United to within one point of fourth-placed Manchester City ahead of Thursday’s Manchester derby, setting up a titanic battle at the Etihad Stadium in a few days’ time, while Burnley finish the weekend just five points clear of the relegation zone with four games remaining.

It took the Red Devils 22 minutes to break the home defence as Anthony Martial sparked a blistering counter-attack, breaking free in his own half before sprinting half the pitch and playing the ball out wide to Ander Herrera, whose sumptuous first-time ball back into the area found Martial, who smartly tucked the ball home past Tom Heaton.

Just six minutes before half-time and Jose Mourinho’s men doubled their lead, Martial again doing the hard work to break into the box and fire at the keeper, who could only deflect the ball into the path of Wayne Rooney, who marked his return to the starting XI by squeaking the ball over the line.

Paul Pogba came close to adding a spectacular third goal on 53 minutes but saw his rasping long-range drive well saved by the home goalkeeper, although that proved one of few chances for either side in the opening quarter of the second-half.

The Frenchman again came close in the final minutes of the match after breaking through the defence and firing a fierce drive at goal, but he was just lacking the accuracy as the ball fizzed inches wide of the post.
