Group G: One to watch

Group G is in focus today, and having profiled the likes of Australia’s Matthew Leckie, Colombia’s Teo Gutierrez and Bosnia’s Miralem Pjanic, we now turn the spotlight onto up-and-coming Portuguese youngster William Carvalho.

William Carvalho

Highly sought-after Sporting Club de Portugal youngster William Carvalho has been a sensation this past season, and despite only recently making his debut for Portugal, is tipped for a starting berth at the World Cup.

With a playing style likened to Patrick Viera, the defensive midfielder screens the back four with his no-nonsense tackles and physical approach. Composed and calm, the 22-year-old has pace and likes to carry the ball forward, often spreading it wide to launch an attack.

Angolan-born, Carvalho moved to Portugal as an infant, joining Sporting’s youth academy at 13 and debuting for the senior team in 2011, aged just 18. Loan spells in Portugal and Belgium followed before a return to Sporting at the beginning of the season – and since then Carvalho has not looked back.

Featuring in over 30 matches, Carvalho’s tireless work in the middle of the park helped Sporting to second place in the League.

Manchester United and Real Madrid are set to fight for his signature, and a good World Cup will raise his value.
