Saal spent the second half of last season on loan at Stellenbosch FC in the National First Division following a training ground bust-up with coach Fadlu Davids.
The 26-year-old winger later parted ways with Maritzburg prior to linking up with Ea Lla Koto, who he represented in the Maize Cup last weekend in Orkney.
"Rantsi [Stars general manager Mokoena] called my agent and asked if I can come for an assessment," Saal tells KickOff.com.
"I'm enjoying my stay so far."
Saal, who initially joined United in 2016 from Santos, played 27 minutes of the Maize Cup final and slotted a penalty past Virgil Vries in the 6-5 shootout loss to Kaizer Chiefs.
Stars recently roped in Linda Mbengu after the ex-AmaZulu, Cape Town All Stars and Mthatha Bucks striker had a trial in Bethlehem.
