The former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper is out of Arminia Bielefeld’s opening match of the new campaign at home to Werder Bremen on Saturday.
He suffered the injury in last weekend’s cup win over amateur club Durlach, where he was taken off just 24 minutes into the game.
Bielefeld won 2-1 to advance to the second round of the German Cup. Fernandez saved a penalty before being injured in a collision.
New Bielefeld signing Chris Katongo is expected to be on the bench for the game as is the case with Siyabonga Nkosi, who did not make the match 18 last weekend.
Despite this, he has been restored to the Bafana Bafana squad to meet Australia in London next Tuesday.
Nkosi played 45 minutes in midweek as Bielefeld beat Turkish club Trabzonspor in a final warm-up friendly.
Zambia captain Katongo, the former top scorer in the PSL, was signed from Brondby of Denmark at the start of the month.
