Portugal looked for the breakthrough early on, but Pepe’s left-footed volley on the turn was tipped away for a corner on 16 minutes.

Cristiano Ronaldo received his first chance on goal after cutting in from the right side, but he failed to squeeze the ball through Andriy Pyatov’s legs on 24 minutes.

Four minutes later, a show of quick feet from Ronaldo opened up a half-chance from the left side of the area, but Pyatov managed to get down and make the save on 28 minutes.

As one-sided as the first half unfolded, the second period started off in a similar mould with Pyatov forced to save another goal-bound effort from Andre Silva’s shot on 57 minutes.

Just after the hour mark, the Portuguese instituted their first change just before the midway point in Rafa Silva for Ruben Neves.

Frustrations grew for Fernando Santos’s side, who fluffed another clear scoring opportunity after Bernardo Silva fired wide of the mark folllowing a pss from Ronaldo.

Ukraine looked to steal the win late on when Rui Patricio fumbled Yevhen Konoplyanka’s long-range shot, but Junior Moraes was unable to profit due to a timeous intervention on 86 minutes as the encounter ended goalless.
