Swansea City’s Icelandic striker Gylfi Sigurdsson continued his good club form onto the international stage as he slotted home an early penalty before adding another three minutes from the break to give the hosts the advantage.
Guus Hiddink’s full-strength side had no reply in the second half as they were unable to break down the Icelandic defence, suffering a 2-0 defeat to the hosts – their third loss in their last four matches.
Elsewhere, Southampton striker Graziano Pelle was on target on his debut for Italy as his 23rd-minute strike, bundled in from a messy Azzurri corner, was enough to secure a 1-0 victory over Malta and continue Antonio Conte’s unbeaten run as the new Italian coach.
Following their 6-0 thrashing of Andorra last week, Belgium needed to comeback from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina, Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan’s 51st minute goal cancelling out Edin Dzeko’s first-half strike.
Croatia humbled Azerbaijan 6-0 thanks to a brace from Wolfsburg midfielder Ivan Perisic, while Gareth Bales’ Wales team earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Cyprus, despite playing with ten men for the majority of the second half after Andy King was given his marching orders in the 47th minute.
