Euro qualifiers: World Champs stumble

Joachim Low, who had earlier highlighted the players’ busy club schedule as a reason for their dismal international form, was delighted after seeing Toni Kroos’ long-range strike beat the Irish goalkeeper to give the Germany the lead on 71 minutes.

Yet Die Mannschaft were unable to claim all three points after former Manchester United defender John O’Shea connected with a low cross to beat Manuel Neuer in the German goal to mark his 100th international cap in style.

The draw leaves Germany in fourth position in their Group D qualifying group, three points behind both the Republic of Ireland and Poland, who played out a 2-2 draw with Scotland.

Elsewhere, Portugal needed a 95th-minute Cristiano Ronaldo header to beat Denmark 1-0 and register their first win of their qualifying campaign, while Switzerland were too good for minnows San Marino as they registered a comfortable 4-0 victory.

In Serbia, the match between the hosts and Albania was suspended after Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic pulled down a flag containing political messages connected to a drone that flew over the pitch.

Members of the Albanian team then rushed over, sparking a huge brawl on the pitch, as fans joined in the fight. The Albanian players were then forced off the field as the home fans threw objects towards them, causing the match officials to abandon the encounter.
