Eto’o benched for Brazil clash

News

Eto’o missed his side’s last encounter against Croatia, and will only likely appear for a few minutes in his side’s dead rubber against Brazil tonight, according to coach Volker Finke.

“He needs another two or three weeks to get back to full fitness, but he might play for a few minutes,” said the Indomitable Lions boss in a press conference yesterday.

“If he can start the game? No ways, it would require a miracle overnight.”

Cameroon have already been knocked out of the tournament, yet their coach feels it won’t be the forward’s last game at a Mundial, backing him to be in the side in Russia 2018.

"I don’t think we have to talk about letting Eto’o play against Brazil to pay homage to him," said Finke.

"This is not necessarily his last match for Cameroon – or at the World Cup.

"I know that he wants to play on for a few more years, at least for two or three more years. He could even make it to another World Cup."

Meanwhile, Cameroon will be without suspended Barca midfielder Alexandre Song following his red card against Croatia in their previous match.

Song lashed out at opposition striker Mario Mandzukic in their 4-0 drubbing to receive his marching orders, and has since received a three-match ban and £13,000 (R235 000) fine.

Kick-off between hosts Brazil and Cameroon is at 10pm.
