With Supersport losing in Bloemfontein to Celtic, a win would have left Ajax champions for this season, but after coming back from 2-0 down, they could not manage an all-important third in the dying seconds and end the season as runners up.
Arrows were the better side on the day in truth and deservedly led at the break thanks to a Richard Henyekane shot from the left that beat Hans Vonk in the visitors’ goal.
And the home side doubled their advantage when Kagiso Senamela netted a second just after the hour mark. At that stage it looked game over, but Ajax have shown a steely side to their character this season that has seen them challenge for the title.
First Dikilu Bageta pulled one goal back from the spot on 73 minutes after Joseph Musonda had brought down substitute Sameegh Doutie in the penalty area to give them hope.
And when another substitute, Russell Mwafulirwa, fired home a second with five minutes left on the clock, it was game-on again.
But try as they might, Ajax couldn’t find a winner, with Nazeer Allie’s snap-shot deep into injury time flying high over the bar and signaling the referees final whistle.
Ajax finish the season as runners-up, while the draw means Arrows finish ninth and will not play in the SAA Supa 8 Cup next season.
