Inter bundled out of Coppa Italia

Inter were forced to defend early on when Samir Handanovic blocked a shot from Ciro Immobile following a slow opening half an hour.

That proved to be the trend for the rest of half as neither side could carve out a clear-cut opening.

After 53 minutes, Handanovic came good again when he pulled off a great diving save to keep out an effort by Luis Alberto followed by another to deny Senad Lulic.

The game’s best chance fell to Joao Mario, but Thomas Strakosha was on hand to keep out the delivery with Antonio Candreva unable to fire in the rebound.

With little in the way of openings, Matias Vecino propped the final chance in regulation time but he nodded a header from close-range over the top as extra-time reeled in.

Inter skipper Mauro Icardi drew close to finding the opener in the clash, but his effort from close-range was covered up by Strakosha.

Lazio stunned the hosts when Immobile opened proceedings after finishing off a cross from Felipe Caicedo in the 108th minute.

However, the hosts were awarded a penalty through the intervention from VAR who overturned Danilo D’Ambrosio’s foul inside the box. Icardi’s shot from the penalty spot proved too strong for Strakosha to send the clash into a penalty shoot-out.

After two misses apiece, Nainggolan’s penultimate strike was tipped over by Strakosha, while Lucas Leiva blasted home the winning strike to secure a semi-final spot for Lazio.
