Real hold Barca at Camp Nou


Ernesto Valverde made five changes from their 2-2 draw against Valencia in LaLiga, and one big change was Lionel Messi who did not start after picking up a knock in that game on Saturday.

Santiago Solari made wholesale changes from their 3-0 win over Deportivo Alaves in LaLiga on Sunday, as only Sergio Ramos, Karim Benzema, Vinicius Junior and Luka Modric retained their places from that game.

Lucas Vazquez gave Madrid a dream start as he opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a close range finish after a square ball from Benzema.

Valverde’s charges were probing for the equaliser but their best chance of the half only came in the 32nd minute after Ivan Rakitic’s strike came off the bar following a great attacking move.

After a lively start to the second half, Malcom brought Barcelona back in the game three minutes before the hour with a strike following a scramble inside the box, 1-1.

Solari made his first change in the 63rd minute as Casemiro replaced Marcos Llorente in the heart of midfield while he also brought on Gareth Bale in place of Vinicius Junior.

Valverde needed some bite in midfield as he brought on Arturo Vidal in place of Rakitic and also called upon the services of Messi who replaced Philippe Coutinho as the hosts went i search of a winning goal.

The Catalan giants were in control for the remaining stages of the second half, but were unable to carve mount any serious openings at goal while Los Blancos did manage to go close, with Raphael Varane nodding wide in the final five minutes.

Nevertheless, 1-1 was how the first leg ended as the sides will now do battle in the second leg in two weeks time.
