Athletics South Africa and the Comrades Marathon Association yesterday announced the date for the 2009 will move back to Sunday, May 24.
A clash of timing with the 2010 World Cup — which will commence on June 11 at Soccer City — will see the 85th running of the Comrades move to Sunday, May 30. President of Athletics South Africa, Leonard Chuene, said: “In 2010, we have the Fifa World Cup and in 2009, the Fifa Confederations Cup is scheduled for June 14 to 28.
“The CMA applied for date changes through KwaZulu-Natal Athletics and in consultation with the relevant local and provincial governments. Athletics South Africa has approved the new dates.”
Last year, in order to respect and avoid a clash with the commemorations of the 1976 Soweto student uprising and the many other Youth Day celebrations throughout South Africa, the race was held on Sunday, June 17.
