Bassogog eyes AFCON final revenge

Hugo Broos' men booked their spot in Gabon's showpiece encounter after seeing off Ghana 2-0 in Thursday's semi-final, where Bassogog scored Cameroon's second on the way to earning the Man of the Match award.

The Indomitable Lions will now square off against Egypt in a repeat of the 2008 AFCON final, where the Pharaohs emerged victorious thanks to a 1-0 win.

Bassogog, 21, is one of many 'second-choice' Cameroon players who only got their chance to travel to Gabon after eight first-team members withdrew prior to the tournament, due to a perceived lack of expectation that they would go nearly this far.

As such, Bassogog is determined to help avenge their defeat to Egypt nine years ago and go on to lift the coveted trophy, telling CAF's official website: "I’m very happy and it is just a happy moment for me and the team.

"This is my first Africa Cup of Nations and for most of my colleagues too, and we are in the final, something which does not happen often.

"It gives me more confidence. I’m happy to score in the semi-finals. It is a good time to score in my first semis at the Africa Cup of Nations.

"Now we will prepare for the final and try to reverse what happened in 2008."

Cameroon and Egypt will lock horns in the continental showpiece clash on Sunday, with kick-off at 21h00 SA time.
