Chiefs’ stadium: announcement soon

Chiefs had announced plans for the Amakhosi Stadium in Krugersdorp as far back as six years ago but its construction will not get underway until all the other building work around the 2010 World Cup preparations are out of the way.   Plan to renovate the existing Bob van Reenen stadium in the Mogale City municipality were announced in 2003. It came after a joint agreement between the club, the municipality, the provincial administration and Lefika, a property development company.   Bobby Motaung, Chiefs’ football manager and the chairman’s son, is an executive director of Lefika, which has been linked with several controversies around the construction of the World Cup stadium in Nelspruit.   The stadium is planned to have a capacity of 55 000 and suites are already for sale on Lefika’s website.   But to date no work has begun because the financing had not been raised. The cost was initially estimated at R1,2-billion but has undoubtedly risen since then.   Motaung insisted the stadium was going to be built and said a major announcement would be made soon.
