Four teams taking part include Kaiser Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Bloemfontein Celtic and Free State Stars.

The MEC of Sports, Mr Ace Magashule and Phakisa Board of Directors say this annual provincial cup is designed to fast track the sporting objectives of the province and activate the provincial programme towards the 2009 Federations Cup and ultimately 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The four teams are the cream of South African soccer and are gearing to make the tournament the most successful.

Representing the teams at the launch at Sandton Hotel in Johannesburg yesterday were Dr Irvin Khoza (Orlando Pirates), Kaiser Motaung (Kaiser Chiefs), Mike Mokoena (Free State Stars) and Mr Ikie Augosti (Bloemfontein Celtic).

Phakisa was represented by the Phakisa Chairperson Mr Hendrik Pietersen, CEO Mokone Nthongoa and Board members.

The draw of the tournament was also conducted by Mr Magashule. The Phakisa Board member Mr Screamer Tshabalala was the link-man behind the organization of the tournament.

The first match at 10h00 will involve Free State Stars and Kaiser Chiefs, followed by a clash between Orlando Pirates and Bloemfontein Celtic. The winners of both matches will clash in the Phakisa Cup final at 20h00.

  • The stars of yester-year will conduct youth soccer clinic a week leading to the games and ball boys and girls will also have the opportunity to have photo shoot with their soccer icons.

  • On Friday 4 July, there will be the distribution of soccer balls in the municipalities by the Department and on the morning of the games there will be a march against hatred attacks (xenophobia) under the banner “United in Sport Against Hatred Attacks, Free State Home For All”.
