BVB bus bomber admits to attack

The Bundesliga side were travelling to the Westfalenstadion for a Champions League quarter-final clash against Monaco in April after three homemade bombs were detonated in close proximity of the team bus.

Dortmund defender Marc Bartra and a police officer were injured during the incident and the suspect, identified only as Sergej W, has since appeared in German court, where he gave evidence on Monday.

The 28-year-old claimed he intended to fake the attack and had designed the explosives so that "that no harm to people could be expected".

The man, who faces a life sentence if found guilty, is also accused of carrying out the attack for financial gain, having made a bet that the aftermath of the bombing would lead to the collapse of the club's share price.
